Upcoming companies such as New Balance have been using plastic waste to make their shoes for years. But, Adidas have gone one step forward, having teamed up with Parley for the Ocean, an organisation that helps increase awareness about environmental destruction in the oceans.
The amount of plastic in our oceans is staggering. Killing harmless animals everyday such as turtles and dolphins. Parley for the Oceans works to retrieve old fishing nets off the coastal areas in the Maldives and recycle them back into materials to use in other products. Doing this, is the next step in cleaning our oceans and reusing the materials.
The plastics used do get cleaned before use, with a special cleaning process. After that the reclaimed plastics are ground down and made into threads that Adidas uses for the shoes.
The trainer’s uppers are made entirely from recycled ocean waste, including PET from discarded plastic bottles and nylon recovered from old fishing nets. The stitched design Adidas have produced certainly makes them stand out, but the shoes should feel just as comfortable as other trainers Adidas have created.
These shoes have changed recycling forever. What is better than recycling old plastic waste into fashionable items?
